About the weave
A Kanchipuram saree is woven from pure mulberry silk in the temple town of Kanchipuram, roughly 400 kilometres east of Gobichettipalayam. What separates it from every other South Indian silk is construction rather than ornament: body, border and pallu are woven from three separate warps and then interlocked by hand — the korvai and petni joins. Pull at that seam and the saree will tear before the join gives way.
The zari is the second marker. Traditional Kanchipuram zari is a flat silver wire wound around a silk core and then gilded, which is why a genuine piece carries real weight — a bridal Kanjivaram commonly lands between 700g and 800g. That heft is not padding; it is metal in the cloth, and it is the reason these sarees are handed down rather than replaced.
At Sangagiri Chettiar the Kanchipuram range sits in the bespoke saree hall at the rear of the Gobichettipalayam ground floor, and on the first floor of the Coimbatore branch. Several of the weaving families we buy from have supplied this house across generations. Because each piece takes twenty to thirty days on the loom, bespoke orders — a specific colour pairing, a particular border width, an initials-woven pallu — need that much lead time, so brides usually place them well before the muhurtham date.

How to recognise a real one
Ask to see any of these on any piece in either store. It is a normal request, not an awkward one.
- Silk
- Pure mulberry silk, twisted three-ply in both warp and weft
- The join
- Korvai — body and border woven separately, interlocked by hand. Look for the fine zigzag at the seam
- Zari
- Silver wire wound on silk, gilded. A burnt thread should leave a fine metallic residue, not ash
- Weight
- A bridal piece runs roughly 700–800g. Featherlight 'Kanchipuram' is almost always a blend
- Reverse
- The motif reads cleanly on the back too — a printed or power-loom imitation does not
Caring for your Kanchipuram saree
- Store rolled or loosely folded in a cotton or muslin cloth — never plastic, which traps moisture against the zari.
- Refold along a different line every few months so the crease never sets into the silk.
- Dry-clean only, and only with a cleaner who is told there is real zari in the cloth.
- Keep naphthalene balls away from direct contact with the zari; they tarnish it.

Bridal Kanjivarams with heavy zari sit well above that. Prices are quoted in store, where you can feel the weight of the cloth before you decide.
How do I know a Kanchipuram saree is genuine?
Check the join between body and border — a genuine korvai weave shows a fine hand-interlocked zigzag rather than a stitched or printed transition. Genuine zari is silver wire wound on a silk core, so the saree carries real weight (typically 700–800g for a bridal piece), and the motif reads cleanly on the reverse. Every Kanchipuram saree we sell is pure silk with real zari; our staff will show you the join and the zari on any piece you are considering.
How long does a bespoke Kanchipuram saree take?
Twenty to thirty days on the loom for a standard bespoke piece, plus finishing. Brides ordering a specific colour pairing, border width or a woven pallu should place the order at least six to eight weeks before the date. Call the Gobichettipalayam store to start a bespoke order.
Can I see Kanchipuram sarees in Gobichettipalayam?
Yes. The bespoke saree hall is at the rear of the ground floor at our Main Bazaar Road store in Gobichettipalayam, open Monday to Saturday 9:30 AM to 8:30 PM and Sunday 10 AM to 1 PM. Our Coimbatore branch at Periyanaickenpalayam keeps its bespoke saree lounge on the first floor.
