About the weave
This is the local weave. Erode district — Gobichettipalayam included — is one of Tamil Nadu's handloom and textile heartlands, and the cotton sarees on our ground floor are woven within the belt rather than shipped in. That proximity is the whole reason this section exists in the form it does: we have bought from these looms since 1925.
Handloom cotton earns its place on merit in this climate. It breathes in a way no silk or synthetic does, it takes a wash without ceremony, it costs a fraction of a silk, and it softens with every wear instead of degrading. The traditional borders and tribal motifs are woven, not printed, so they survive the saree.
At around 350g and starting at ₹1,400 it is the most-bought saree in the shop by volume — the working woman's saree, the summer saree, the saree bought four at a time. If you want to understand what Sangagiri Chettiar actually is to this town, this is the section to stand in, not the bridal hall.

How to recognise a real one
Ask to see any of these on any piece in either store. It is a normal request, not an awkward one.

Caring for your Handloom Cotton saree
- Machine or hand wash cold. The first wash may release a little dye — wash it alone once.
- Skip the fabric softener; it coats the fibre and takes away exactly the breathability you bought it for.
- Dry in shade to keep the colour; direct Tamil Nadu sun fades cotton fast.
- Starch lightly if you want the crisp pleat; leave it unstarched for the softest everyday drape.

In the Gobichettipalayam and Erode handloom belt — the district around this shop. It is one of Tamil Nadu's principal handloom regions, and we have been buying from these looms since 1925.
Is handloom cotton good for Tamil Nadu summers?
It is the best everyday option we carry. Cotton breathes far better than silk or synthetic, it washes without special handling, and it gets softer with each wear. For a formal summer function, chiffon is the lighter alternative.
How do I tell handloom cotton from a power-loom saree?
Look at the texture and the border. Handloom cotton has a slight irregularity across the weave — the sign of a hand, not a fault — and the border and motifs are woven into the cloth, so they appear on the reverse too. A printed border sits only on the face and will crack over time.
